It can also reach the size of a human – BBC News Magazine

Researchers have sequenced the coelacanth genome. This deep-sea fish has changed little physically in the last 300 million years, and the genome analysis shows few changes in its protein-coding genes.

The research could tell us more about how animals evolved from fish. Read more in the paper in Nature.

Some fish can climb waterfalls, and they seem to have evolved to use the same muscles as they use for eating. The Nopili rock-climbing goby can climb waterfalls as high as 100 metres, and it uses two suckers, one of which it also uses for feeding on algae.

A rare inherited disease, called trimethylaminuria, means that the sufferer’s body fluids and breath smell of fish. This is because they cannot break down trimethylamine, which is naturally found in food, and it build up in their bodies.

You can make a living out of the science of smells, but it does have its downsides…

The Map of Life is an interactive website that maps fish and land-based vertebrates around the world to create a searchable map. Later in the year there will be more species added, including plants and invertebrates.

See the report in Nature.

Some fish, including cichlids in Lake Malawi, have in their throats, which crush food as it is eaten. These were the earliest teeth and evolved more than 500 million years ago.

A type of plankton, called copepods, leap out of the surface of the ocean to avoid being eaten by fish. These tiny and brightly-coloured shrimp-like animals live just under the surface of the sea and can ‘fly’ 10 to 20 times the length of their body.

Researchers are looking at the scales of Brazil’s Arapaima fish to get ideas for better armour. The fish’s scales, which are tough on the outside and soft on the inside, help it resist the bite of the piranha.

There are almost 27,000 different kinds (species) of fish, and fish are found all over the world, in fresh and salty water.
